Mounting Lowrance Elite-5 HDI on Yamaha FX HO

I wanted the install to be the least intrusive on the ski, and really have a couple of wires to deal with if the fishfinder is not mounted ...The same minimalist approach as my cage design (see my prior post) ...
As an engineer, I also like to tinker with things, an in this case used laptop lithium batteries ...

Here are the pics with it mounted, and the red brick is the battery pack that I created ... It's 24 x used laptop batteries that still have 90% capacity .. About 13AH usable power, which with the lowarnce's 1.1 amp draw should give me about 8 to 10 hours of use, and only weighs about 4 pounds .. A lot better than a 30 AH lead acid battery needed for the same out put ...

have not tested it yet, but heading out tomorrow, and I will update with how the battery and the fishfinder perform ..
    Cheers ..

Very nice, I'm thinking about getting an Elite-4 to replace my Garmin. I assume the battery pack is for power while the ski is off while fishing and not draining the ski battery?

A separate battery is not really needed, just hard wire it to the ski battery. I have left my unit on for a week while parked and no problems starting the ski.....

The separate battery serves as 2 functions:
    1) It's less intrusive - no extra holes needed to run the wire to the back of the ski
    2) It's a failsafe .. I carry a very small D-Cell size capacitor bank that I created that can be charged, and jump the ski if the battery ever dies. And I really don't trust being 10/15 miles off shore, with a motorcycle battery, while my fishfinder is running off of it (call me paranoid ) ..
It's the best insurance plan that weighs about 2.5 pounds (actual weight)...

I bought this off ebay ... I have tested this on cars up to 6 cyl - Starts them just fine ... You can even carry a small solar panel, if you don't want a second battery... The only thing you have ot worry about is to not overcharge it ....

How does the capacitor product compare to the now fairly common Lithium Iron battery/booster packs?

I am guessing the capacitor unit has less total available energy compared to a compact LiFe battery pack

That power pack is about 5 of the 24 Batteries that I used for my pack .. to give your the 13 AH - they are counting each batteries individually, and bumping up the voltage, which is a joke .. That thing can never start a dead car .... the capacitor pack that I built from ebay by itself can theoretically put out 2000 AMPS, so it will have no issues even replacing a car battery...

But is is packaged nicely, and can come in handy in the middle of the ocean, if you don't have any other options ....
