    Knock sensor operation

Does anyone know if the knock sensor contiues to work and adjust timing after you reflash the OEM ECU with a Vtech tune, if it feels knocking?

Or is the knock sensor only capable of adjusting the stock OEM tune timing, when necessary?

It would be in operation no doubt.

    very little data is available
first Gus had bad detonation on the Jesus tune
IMO we need the "noise" signal in the logs and the set point when the ecu hears knock
when you run these motors past the stock rpm limits the noise signal will be much different than stock
so I would not trust that it is working perfect

The knock sensor works with any ECU. Whether company V software uses it effectively is another issue.

Except for the Rotax Racing ECU's. Knock control is disabled on them.

Does Vtech logger or any of the Motec ECU models log knock activation? or do you just see it in the timing when it suddenly step changes?

motec has a log file for each cylinder and the user sets the limit and what to do when when it is crossed
it has short term retard and long term retard all user changable

That is my point exactly, the sensor itself works all the time no matter the ECU. It is up to the ECU software to use it or not.
Motec's knock sensor software is extensive and user tailorable in a very user friendly manner.

This is all the Vtech logger can monitor/log in relation to ignition (as of this writing).

    • basic ign angle
    • desired ign angle
    • ign angle
    • ign angle #1
    • ign angle #2
    • ign angle #3
    • noise level
    • retard #1
    • retard #2
    • retard #3

When I enable "retard" in the logs I see it as activated or not activated. Looks like a plain square wave in the graph (imagine it as binary 1 or 0). I've never played around with "noise level" but it could be interesting. The Bosch ECU has sooo many parameters it could monitor, its just not in the vtech's plan or able to crack yet. I say yet because its possible or a matter of time. The vtech only recently opened up many of the above ignition parameters. Then comes the other issue...the vtech isn't trying to do everything a MoTeC can because its primarily going after a different group.

Here is what it looks like to see knock on a Motec log at 20 HZ

    http://www.nbs-stl.com/RxpxTuning/MotecKnock.png

The logger missed the actual knock event that triggered the timing getting pulled but you do see the timing result.

This motor is running 112 OZ fuel at 16 PSI and 30 degrees total timing.
