    Repair Advice on 2002 GP1200R

    Hey All,

First time posting here and just need some sound advice on my ski.

So i have quite the repair bill on my Stage 2 GP1200R. I have it in the shop and am contemplating getting it repaired now.

Here is what the shop said about the current things that need replaced:

when we pulled the engine to replace the starter bedix we found that your crank case cracked & additionally ruined the stator.

There was no brackets on the exhaust, which lead to the exhaust bouncing around and cracked the case, then water got in there and ruined the stator, starter, & bendix

The shop said they will do the repair for 1,600$ in total.

Thoughts on weather or not it is worth repairing or selling?

    Thanks in advance!

Yep, it's broke. $1600 actually sounds cheap to fix with shop rates.

Personally? I'd pull the motor, have someone tig weld the broken piece back on, find a good used stator, starter, bendix, loctite some exhaust bracket bolts back in and be on your merry way.

This can be fixed for under $400 by someone good with a wrench and a friend that has a welder.

300$ would be a dream price on this repair haha. I however know nothing about how to repair these PWC's.

Anyone in the Pittsburgh PA area that is willing to do the said fix above?

Thanks Riick370 for the quick response!

Well, first start browsing the used markets for the replacement parts needed. Get all those collected. Then take the motor and the broken piece to the local weld shop and have them put humpty dumpty back together. After that? Oh come on I'm sure you have a couple buddies good with a wrench. Get em a case of beer and a pack of smokes to bolt it back together.

Haha you may have just convinced me to do just that.

    Thanks

If time and or finding buddies to fix it is a problem.. just take the motor somewhere to be welded back together and bring it back to the shop fixed. Then you'll only get charged to fix the starter/bendix/stator/labor to put back together.

Yeah I believe I have already found all the pieces on ebay for just over 300$, shipped, that's including a used crank case!

That will be huge, thanks for the advice. I just hope I have the mechanical knowledge to bolt it all back together. Better than losing 2k$ on it.

Swapping out crankcases is not something you can do by yourself. It's only to be done by experienced yamaha mechanics.

Having the piece welded back on does not require motor disassembly and will be just as strong.
