215 sc symptoms - ring any bells

    I have a 2008 sc 215 that's proving difficult to start.
Sometimes it's fine, other times it's not.

I've been trying to isolate strange symptoms but here's a brief summary.

Changed / checked electrical including starter, solenoid, corrosion and grounds. None of them.

    Oily plugs
    • Cleaned plugs - seemed to start better but problem returned
    • Replaced tubes in head - no difference still oily
Abnormally high pressure in coolant tank
    • At first I thought I was loosing coolant but when the tank cap is removed coolant flows back under pressure from somewhere. (have lost about 2 cups over 12 months)
Replaced plugs (swapped with other engine - sports boat)
    • Starts ok but so does the other engine with suspect plugs.

    Can anyone advise?
Do these symptoms indicate a specific problem?

Bought this thing recently with the promise that engines have been re-built?

    Thanks

are you getting oil on the plug electrodes inside the engine? or outside?
hows the intake looking on the throttle body?

Is it just pressure build up in coolant or is there any clouding, oil or discolour?

With start issue, without a doubt the place to start is a new AGM battery. Yes, your battery may look new, be just two years old, be OEM, have a full charge and over 12v. BUT, OEM struggle to last two years (depending on how they've been looked after), show good voltage but have very low CCA remaining (amps). The systems on the Seadoo's are so sensitive to battery condition, it causes issues everywhere that you wouldn't associate with it (unlike a car you may diagnos).

Your pressure in coolant won't be caused by this, but fit an AGM and you'll give yourself the best chance of fixing your start issue if it still exists (I would bet money it'll suddenly be ok).

The best start on your pressure issue is to do a proper leak down test (not compression test). This way you'll get a good insight into the condition of the engine and see if anything is pushing back into the cooling system. It'll also give you a better idea of how good the engine rebuild was.

Both the thread & electrode initially, having replaced the tubes, it seems now just the electrode.
    I will check the intake.

I'm beginning to suspect that there is some water ingression happening. The coolant seems normal (green) and I didn't notice any milky / white signs on the dipstick but I did notice the oil level was too high, about 15mm above the max level on the stick. Have corrected this now and will monitor it.

Not sure mate, what's been done or what hasn't but I do know a few valves where replaced after an issue with the timing chain but has been running ok since other than starting.

The absolute no start, (cranking ok), came after use and I didn't bother with blasting out the exhaust. It sat all night hooked up to my pickup with the bow down.
Whether this may have caused a bit of water entering the mainifold??? This isolated incident though doesn't explain the inconsistent starting.

I'll check your suggestions and advise.
    Thanks again

Yeah intake hose from sc to throttle body has a bit of oil / water reisdue.
Not a lot - it certainly wasn't dripping out or anything, just the odd smear.
    Cheers

    hmm..
so intake has oil? before the throttle body?
    and oil on plugs?
is the dipstick being pushed out when riding?
    maybe tops valve failure?

    My 06 did something similar.
Basically it was in drown mode all the time - no inj pulse.
BUDS didnt show it in drown mode but it had the symptoms.
Reset of TPS and it came right

    Thanks guys.

I put it all back together day, even removing the jet to make sure the impellor was free & easy.

Started perfectly and hummed beautifully for 2 minutes under flush.
See how we go after a run.
    maybe tomorrow.
