    Purchasing a modded 1998 yamaha gp1200 (actually a 97 in a late model 98 hull)

    Hi all,

I'm going tuesday to pick it up, and we are meeting at a lake so I will be able to test drive it. Have never personally owned a yamaha, but was wondering what all I should check before I buy. I am not bound to the sell yet, actually the guy is buying my xp without a doubt (deposit sent already) I still have the option to trade for the gp or sell my xp as is. but I really like the gp, and in fact it's what I've been looking for and was what I was looking to buy in place of my 96 xp. Now this thing has some mods, it's ported (It's more like 1300cc), has some other bolt ons.. I'm just wondering what the compression test should show, and if anything else I should keep my eye out and check during the test running? He says all works but the gas gauge, and he has the replacement float that I need to fix that.

Let me know all you can! I have 1 day left!

    Check the drank

You might want to index the crankshaft to make sure it is not twisted. I had to replace both of mine in my 99 Exciter

Stock compression should be around 120 psi. I would check to make sure there wasnt any saltwater corrosion anywhere. If you have good compression and there is no corrosion, the only thing left is some good test runs to make sure there is no other problems(especialy after it warms up). What mods are done? How many hours does the ski have?

Decided against purchasing the 1200.. hull was pretty beat up.. painted black and chipping everywhere.. also a crack in the hood, the seat had a couple tears... but I did sell my 96 xp ss for $2000 so I'm currently in the market for a nice 98 plus gp1200!
