Curious about X model intercooler failures.

I was wondering if a reason was ever determined as to why the newer X model intercoolers were failing so soon and so often. Were they just junk?, hurt by SC mods?, maintained incorrectly? , or what? I mean theres not a lot to them so whats going wrong?

I was certain that there was a service bulletin posted either last year or 2013 detailed recommendations and potential fixes provided by BRP. I tried to look it up yesterday and could find reference to it, but nothing specific. I know that at some point, someone posted a TSB. I'm guessing it was removed. It would be nice if there was a service bulletin list available.

The first gen did not have a bleeder. The second gen did and they seem to hold up better.

Is there an easy way to distinguish a 1st from 2nd gen?

The problems started with 2011 external IC's that are smaller in size than previous years and a different manufacture. The 2008-2010 external IC's worked just fine and continue to do so.

Correct. Prior to 2011 the external coolers where very good. What I called the first Gen would actually be 2nd gen. They where smaller and did not have a bleed line. The 3rd gen that are being used now, are the same size as 2nd gen, but have a bleeder.

Is the bleeder visible when the intercooler is installed in the ski? I just bought a used 2013 RXT-X and I'm wondering if it has the newer one.

    Sorry to thread highjack

Yes, you should be able to see it. Try removing the left side rear access panel. It should be right there.

This is a 2010 RXT-X 260 OEM IC with bleeder in front. These are the ones that have performed well over the years. The 2011-2014 OEM IC's are NOT this wide.

This configuration is using a SpeedFreeks relocation kit.
