2012 gti check engine light and alarm
So after coming back in from a salt water ride at the house went to flush the ski. Started the engine turned on the water about 20 seconds later turned of water and went to kill the engine and just as I fid this the check engine light came on and alarm sounded. Killed the engine put the key back in and it was off but I didn't restart engine. Does the engine need to be on for that light and alarm to go off and how do I check for a code? Till that point was running fine.

Well took it out yesterday and no isdues so I'm assuming it wS an exhaust temp code throwing the alarm on from being on the hose. Just strange though as it was literally on for 20 seconds seems pretty quick for a temp issue.

maybe your garden hose was a little restricted.
a supercharged engine can sound the alarm pretty quick if you blip it a few times, even when it's on the hose
you have about 30 seconds when cold, likely far less after the ski has been run a while
I'd go for at least a full minute on the hose at idle for a decent flush. I use a ball valve on my hose to pulse the water to help kick up any sand hiding in there.
