And yet another broken intake grate
Here we go again:
This morning I'd planned on dropping the ski into the water to do some testing. I'm underneath bolting the ride plate up and measuring a few things, and remember to take a look at the intake grate.
Sure enough, there's a huge crack in the usual place - where the wing and the top vertical support bar meet. The crack is 1.35 inches long, and goes through the wing from top to bottom.
Scary thing is that I was riding yesterday doing a bunch of WOT pulls for testing. Can't believe this thing held together, given the size of the crack.
NOTE: this grate is untouched except for some very minor profiling where the grate ramp meets the pump shoe. Otherwise, *untouched*.
THIS IS THE SECOND R&D GRATE THAT'S CRACKED ON ME. The first one actually broke while I was riding with my (ex)wife and threw us off at 50 mph. She was hurt, I was only sore.
ATTENTION GLEN AT R&D - GET YOUR ACT TOGETHER OR SOMEONE IS GOING TO GET HURT OR KILLED. YOU'RE LOOKING AT A MASSIVE LAWSUIT ONE OF THESE DAYS.

Yeah this is getting ridiculous.
Even the last couple of new 800 grates we have purchaced have some wierd casting dimples in the bottom of the scoop.
David, remember the last time you, me, and Coop went out ???
Check them grates Boys and Girls !!!

Anybody friends with Skat Trak? I saw that name posted in the other thread.

Rich, that is *exactly* where my crack is. And it's exactly where my first one cracked.
Too bad R&D's official stance on this is "Too Bad". I'm telling you, someone is going to get seriously hurt, or killed, due to an exploding intake grate, and R&D is going to face a massive lawsuit. I already put them on notice via certified mail about 2 years ago that there was a problem with their product.

Control the pump tunnel pressure and this problem gets a bunch smaller...
