Thread: Gel coat?

  1. #1

    Gel coat?

I did not notice it was happening...

There is a tear in the carpet on my trailor bunks...it has been scratching the bottom of the boat when putting it on-off.

Some of the scratches are pretty deep. Is there any chance I have compromised the hull or is it very thick on the rails and V?

If no real damage is done other than the coat...how best to repair or refinish?

Does it need to be glass smooth or does a satin or sanded finish reduce drag? I have never really worked on boats but have shaped and finished surfboards...a very fine grit rubout was what I usually liked on my boards.

    Thanks in advance for advice.

    Mike

It is fairly thick there. This is common. You can do some repairs to smooth out the scratches/gouges with Marine-Tex. Found at most boating stores.
Really easy to use and very hard when it dries. Sand to desired smoothness/texture.

    * Also, repair the cause of the problem and recarpet your bunker.

I have similiar issues. I have never done body work, I saw at the marine shop gel coat? Can this be applied after? Would this be a good option for spider cracks as well? How does it apply? Or in other words, can you sand gel coat and then put a finishing coat over it?
