That is normal while running it on the hose. Because the water runs through the system backwards and most of the cool water goes through the pto and the cen cyclinders. The mag dose not recive much water to cool it down. I would run it on the water to get a true reading.

It's pretty common but if you can't keep your hand on it, you're probably running it for more than a minute or two.
You can purchase the temp cards from Randy and attach them to the head, you'll know how hot it is.
I use those and a temp gun, point and know.

Before or after the engine mods?
What size is all your tubing 3/4?
    What kind of RPM's?

My PSI triple pipes came with water manifold gaskets of various size openeings to help keep temps between cyls. constant. A smaller 1/2" for PTO, 5/8" for mid, and 13/16" for the mag. Maybe you can try this and see what happens?

I see where you say it is normal for the mag cylinder to get hot. Wouldn't that mean it isn't a good idea to run it on the hose for long?

Prob not a good idea if it's running that hot. Or you can hook the garden hose up to the intake hose coming off the jet pump. FYI: Be sure to start the engine and then turn on the water, then turn off the water and shut off the engine.
