Air Flow of WaterBox, OEM and modified...

For some background on the previous airflow work, check these links:

    http://greenhulk.net/forums/showthread.php?t=18850

    http://greenhulk.net/forums/showthread.php?t=19138

Okay, some more airflow work….here is what was flowed:

    OEM Stock WaterBox
OEM Stock WaterBox w/baffle mod (completely removed)

    04’ OEM IC
    05’ OEM IC
    06’ OEM IC

    OEM J-pipe

Using the same flow target numbers as before, which was 0.460 air flow rate, here are the numbers we found…

    OEM Stock WaterBox

    Blower speed = 31hz
    H2O backpressure = 15.1 in/water

OEM Stock WaterBox w/baffle mod (completely removed)

    Blower speed = 25.1hz
    H2O backpressure = 6.9 in/water

Conclusion = A modified/gutted OEM WaterBox is 54.3% LESS restrictive than a standard box…This would support the findings (as researched on this forum) of 100+ rpm gain and roughly 4hp gain on a dyno…

    OEM J-PIPE

J-Pipe itself, standard and untrimmed, had 7.5 in/water…

    OEM IC, 2004-2006

The OEM units differ in flow, as well as design (pictures to come tonight)…Basically as the newer the IC was, the more free flowing it was…The 04 and 06 came from an RXP, where as the 05 came from an RXT…

With the airflow rate the same, the blower speed was SLIGHTLY less per unit, but all 3 were within 0.7hz of each other…

The 04 unit was WAY more hissing and nasty sounding compared to the other 2 years. We didn’t block off any flow using tape like we did on the 06, but airflow basically went all the way to the opposite end before it dispersed outward. We COULD have blocked 75% of the unit, and still had the same airflow numbers…

    04 IC = 14.9 in/water
    05 IC = 14.2 in/water
    06 IC = 13.9 in/water

If you are gonna be swapping OEM IC’s you might want to look into an 06 or higher unit….

Great info! Danny, how did you mod the waterbox? Did you completely cut out the baffles, but leave the exit pipe intact? Or did you cut that too?

On a side note, as airflow EXITED the waterboxes....

    - on the STOCK unit, airflow was exiting at an angle...not straight out, almost at a 25-35 degree angle...Most likely because of the internal wall...

    - on the MODIFIED unit, airflow was straight and true...with no wall...
