    Carbon ring/seal

    Hi all,

Just a quick question...where is this carbon seal/ring that I hear about? Is it where the input shaft comes in thru the hull from the outside of the ski?
    Thanks,
    Steve

Part number 10 is the carbon ring
Part number 8 is the seal carrier that meets to it
Part number 9 is an accordian rubber boot that keeps part 8 & 10 together by the spring-like pressure.

Does anyone know why they switched from the bearing and seals of the older 'doos? It seems like a safer system to me.

I agree. I prefer the bearing carrier with the seals too.
Back in the ealry to mid 90's, they came with the rubber accordian boot and carbon seal. It didn't take much trash to get between the mating surfaces and take in water. In 1994, when I had my XP, they had an upgrade kit available at the dealers to upgrade from the carbon seal to the carrier style beaing and seals.
I ended upgraded my 1994, 1995 and 1996 XP's every year for thsi carrier type seal. Better safer IMHO.
and remembering, my 2001 RX even had the accordian style...I upgraded it too.

But, yes, if it is an older DOO and has the carbon seal, I would upgrade it to the carrier style with bearings. Oh ! not to mention, it had a grease zert fitting.

The bearing seals were constant maintenance, requiring grease after every ride. They also induced drag on the engine. I prefer the carbon seal myself...it's very reliable if you follow simple steps.

So, does my 98 have the carbon ring or the bearings?

Not sure what you mean D... but 98's had carbon seals. For everyone's information, they changed from bearing seals in 95 models to carbon seals in 96 and later...

96XPSS - Not all 96 and later model Doo's have the carbon/mechanical seal arrangement. I thought that carbuff91 was asking about his 98 XP-L. The 98 GSX-L & XP-L models came with the bearing/lip seal arrangement.
