    Drive shaft question

I recently purchased a 95 slx 780 as my first ski and have a problem with it. While out riding this weekend the impeller quit working. The ski still runs and starts fine. It was running fine and while riding it all of a sudden the ski quit going. It was running, but the jet was not working. In looking into the problem it appears to be between the engine and the impeller on the shaft which comes out of the engine. That shaft spins while the engine is running but there is also a shaft comes forward from the impeller. where those 2 shafts meet up in a coupler and at this time when the engine shaft spins and the impeller shaft does not. The impeller will spin freely, and the engine shaft spins while the engine is running, they just don’t spin together. I saw what looks like a set screw between the two shafts which may be broken or stripped allowing the two shafts to not spin together. What I do not know is if this is some special breakaway connector that is designed to allow for the impeller to break free of the engine if something gets caught in the impeller. I was just going to reset the screw, but I don't want to mess up something, or if I have a larger problem I want to address it before taking the ski out again.

    Thanks

    Ed

    ed Welcome to the Hulk.
The drive shaft is one piece. You either have a stripped drive shaft or the impeller splines are stripped.

    Beer,

It looks like you were right, it is the drive shaft and not the impeller. Is there a good source for this part, or will I have to go back to the manufacturere for it. Also, if I am going to replace it are there any better aftermarket shafts available, and are there any other upgrades that I should do while I have the shaft out?

    Thanks

    Ed

Make sure your Impeller shaft bearings and seals are good. When they fail it will take out the drive shaft. Jay or Tony at Atlantic can help you with those parts as well.

Welcome to the Hulk Ed. You can use any Polaris driveshaft (except hurricane) that is the same length. Is yours the short jet pump? (3 major components) or the long pump? (4 major components)

That part is for the 96, I have a 95 which lists the part as being $305.75, unless the drive shaft from the 96 will work in the 95.

Part number for Drive Shaft for 95 6230085
part number for Drive Shaft for 96 6230123

Also, is this something a beginner can do?

    Xlint,

When you are referring to 3 or 4 major components where specifically do I need to check to verify this?
