Bay turns deadly for 2 on watercraft

MADEIRA BEACH, Florida - Just as the summer boating season got started, a collision Saturday evening of a power boat and a water scooter killed two people.

The accident, at the beginning of Safe Boating Week, happened as two friends went out about 6 p.m. for a romp in Boca Ciega Bay, which was crowded with watercraft.

Authorities and family members said that Corey Vincent, 19, and her friend Joseph Battista, 23, couldn't wait to take the 3-week-old Sea-Doo watercraft into Boca Ciega Bay. Vincent's mother and stepfather, Jim and Judith Dowd, have bay access behind their home off 140th Avenue in Madeira Beach.

I hate to hear stories like this, but I think it is something we all should keep in mind when out on the water.....

I think the more we hear about this the more we will pay attention when we are out riding. It just like riding motor cycles on the streets. You can't trust that anyone sees you, you must make sure you see them. And it's true on the water. Just assume they don't see you.

This is true about small watercraft and motorcycles. I almost lost my leg in a motorcycle accident because someone "did not see me" and it was their fault. Of course, nothing ever happens to the car's driver, or in this case, the 29 footer.

There is a small spoil island right there, if you run around it you are blind for incoming traffic and risking a head on collision. Not the 1st time in this area for that type of tragedy.
