    97 SL1050 idles fine, but wont go over 20MPH

    Ok, im working on this Ski for a friend as a favor, and it will idle fine, but when you get on the throttle, it will slowly get up to about 20 MPH. Then it sounds like the impeller is running out of the water. a real high pitch whine. All the time this is happening, its smoking really bad. i replaced all three plugs, cleaned the carbs, and put fresh gas in after draining the old gas. after running for a minute or so, all the plugs are hot to the touch. Its almost like its missing at high RPM, but fine down low.

    Any Suggestions??

    check your impeller for debris/damage, sounds like a chipped impeller, causing it to cavitate

    Ill check out the impeller today. anything else that would cause this?

    I'm thinking cavatation as well, maybe even check for black soot around the shoe, where it mates to the hull.

    This might be due to cavitation. Not enough fresh water is being allowed into the cooling system as it draws air from the pump area during cavitation.
    Its almost like its missing at high RPM, but fine down low.

    Any Suggestions??

    i looked at the impeller, and there is some rolling on the end of the blades, pretty bad on one of them. i couldnt get the grate off to look at it better, but i took some pics of it: (pics are big, so will take a while to load)

    What do you think? would this damage cause it to run like the way it is?

    You need a new impeller, wear ring, and there is no tail cone on the back side. It looks like you will need a set of pump stator bearings and seals as well.

    Where is the best place to buy these things from, allso, will i need a special tool to remove the impeller?

    That's the pump bearings screaming for mercy! They're rusted and probably ready to seize.
