2002 Virage -- Water in engine - Help

    Guys,

I have found out since last summer that my sons 02 Virage has water in the engine. I have pulled the plugs and pumped as much out as possible. I have tried to start it but it will not start. It tries to start but will not run. What is the next step? I am a complete newbie on this so be gentle.

Rich, First I'd like to say WELCOME to the Green Hulk Forums.

You're probably going to have a bigger issue than getting it started if water/water condensation has taken out the crank.

The first thing I'd do is split the electrical box and check for water condesation.
How full was the engine, I think it's worth checking crank index to make sure the engine isn't hurt.

I will open the electrical box tonight and check it out. Also, is there some documentation to tell me how to check if the indexing is correct? Told you I am a complete newbie

Go to the tech section and find Domestic Engine, you'll find the directions for indexing a crankshaft.

There was no water in the electrical box, looked like brand new. Bought some new plugs and put them in and it still won't start, it trys to start but will not stay running.

Have not checked the index yet.

    Are you indeed getting spark?
Are you losing the spark when you stop cranking?
Do you get one little spark while releasing the start button?
With a dry box I would perfrom the stator test and see if it's bad.

Well, Great news I think. Got the Virage started and on the water this weekend, at first it smoked alot but then it quit and ran well from that point for the next 2 days.

What did it take to get it started?

I pumped all of the water out of the engine, replaced the plugs, and then just kept trying to start it, it would try to run but wouldn't stay running so finally I just kept pumping the throttle over and over until it finally started.

Once it ran for a few minutes and the smoke quit it ran like it always has ran since we first bought it new
