Gp won't turn over???
So I goto fire up the ski because I was planning on taking it camping for the long weekend, but it wouldn't start. So I pulled off the seat, and the starter is turning over normally but it isn't engaging to the flywheel. So the engine is not turning over.
It seems to be turning the starter fast, so I think it would have enough power to throw out the bendix or whatever it is called. So I pulled off the flywheel cover and everything appears normal.
Do you think it could be the bendix? Anything else I should check? Just weird that it got like this as it ran fine 2 weekends ago...

A bad bendix could mimic the problem you're describing....that's why I have three right now....pick them up cheap on e-bay so you have spares. They can be rebuilt or thrown away if you buy replacements cheap enough. Could be the starter, but that's doubtful. Probably the bendix. JMO

Do I have to remove the flywheel to get it off?
I can almost get it out, maybe if I pulled the starter out I could squeeze it out?

From the picture the bendix definitely looks bad. Grease the next one good

On a GPR the flywheel does not need to come off to replace the Starter Bendix. I dont remember on a GP1200 but I dont think so. You should be able to pull it forward and then to the right to slide it out.
You may need to remove the starter to ease the removal of the bendix, this is a good time to clean the ground battery cable terminal which is known to corrode sometimes.

On the 65u the flywheel has to come off, make sure you torque it back to 60lbs. when re-assembly. Follow Fercho's recommendations on sandpapering the ground connection tab from the ground wire and apply dielectric grease when re-installing.
New bendix, grease thoroughly but not too much or it will find it's way to pick-ups and flywheel then you might get an intermittent spark/timing problem from the excessive grease. Not too much.
