    97 XP starter troubles

I just put a brand new engine in my dad's 97 XP, and i can't get the starter to turn it over. The battery is fully charged, and when i hit the start button, the solenoid will click and the starter will engage but not turn the engine over. It will do this about every second when i hold down the starter button. Any ideas?

PS this is with a brand new starter and a brand new starter solenoid

Make sure the ground from your engine is not corroded. Verify by connecting one end of a jumper cable from the engine to battery ground. If she turns over...the wire is bad.

Otherwise...verify the engine is not bound up by rotating by hand with the spark plugs out, then check battery voltage at the starter and engine ground while the start button is pushed.
