Follow-Up to Drunk Police Officer Story

This is from the Ventura County Star. It requires registration so I won't link to it. Here's the story.

A boating collision in Monterey County over the weekend seriously injured an Agoura Hills teenager and led to the arrest of an off-duty officer with the Los Angeles Police Department, authorities said Tuesday.

Jason Penalba, 18, suffered a crushed lower vertebra, broken pelvis and damage to his liver and spleen after a boat crashed into the back of the Seadoo watercraft he was riding Saturday at Lake San Antonio, according to the Monterey County Sheriff's Office. Penalba was the passenger of the craft driven by Erik Shirey, 19, of Santa Barbara, who was treated for minor cuts and bruises.

Monterey County authorities arrested David Ernest Guzman, 30, on suspicion of being under the influence of alcohol when he drove his 20-foot boat into the back of the Seadoo Penalba was on. Guzman and his passenger, William Francis Jeffers, 29, fled in the boat after the collision, Monterey County Cmdr. Tracy Brown said.

Someone in another boat heard the crash and went to help the teens, Brown said. Penalba was taken to UCLA Medical Center, but a hospital spokesman had no record of a patient by that name.

Sheriff's deputies searched for the fleeing boat. A Monterey County park ranger on a boat in the lake found Guzman and took him to shore.

He was arrested on suspicion of boating under the influence, failing to stop at the scene of an accident, and failing to render aid. Guzman's passenger, Jeffers, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence after deputies found him driving a truck with a trailer toward the lake to tow the boat.

A nine-year veteran with the Los Angeles Police Department, Guzman has been suspended with pay pending the outcome of the investigation. He is scheduled to appear June 1 in Monterey County Superior Court in Salinas, Brown said.
