Thread: RPM Surge

    RPM Surge

    Hi

I was hoping someone can please help me out. I have an '03 R-12X and I was riding over the weekend and when I was in the flat water and WOT the ski would go up 6150 and hold power for about 10-20 seconds and then the rpms would drop to about 5800 and then surge back up and then drop back down. It would do this continually.

    Has anyone had this problem?

    Thanks so much.

Mines doing the same thing. I changed the wastegate solenoid but it did not fix it. I swapped the MAP sensor and the TCP sensor and no change either. I'm going to order the Intake Air Temp sensor and hope its the problem. I'll report back

Nitro - do you have any ideas?.

are you guys buying marine gas maybe? sounds like it's hitting deto and pulling rpm's /timing.. or a suspect knock sensor...

Yes I am using Marine Gas. I have tried putting in STP water remover in.

No marine gas here 92 octane BP. If it were pulling boost and timing due to deto wouldn't it cut the RPM's back to a steady 5900 or so instead of surging?

yes it would..so maybe the knock sensor is intermittant failure.

i'm guessing here and I hate doing that.. have you tried to pull codes?

Intercooler getting heat soaked, at the higher rpms. It then it cools down at the lower RPM's, allowing the ecu and sensors to see the cooler air, it then kicks up the RPM's allowing it to go in this cycle over and over. This is just a GUESS.

Dav D-man I'm guessing too. That's why I'm going to change the IAT - cheap and easy to replace. The F1 and warning light have never indicated anything.

Rodney I think thats exactly whats happening but if everything were working right it would reduce the boost and the rpm would drop from say 6180 to 6100 and maintain that. I'm thinking the IAT is not signaling the change in temp with the reduced boost quick enough for the ECM to maintain a steady RPM
    We'll See.

Please forgive the newb but what is the IAT?

Also, I rode this ski all last year and didnt notice the problem and it was a hotter summer last year so far.

    Thanks
