IL/WI/MI/IA riders----Lake Michigan ride
On Sat July 14th there is a group of us planning to ride from Winthrop Harbor to downtown Chicago.
The plan is to launch from Skipper Buds Marina in Winthrop Harbor then go as far South as Soldier Field. We can check out Navy Pier from the water and tool around along the shoreline. We will need to refuel @ Belmont Harbor then make our way back. I am open for going down the river but it gets old fast (all no wake)
I have done this ride 10+ times now. It can get physical but the early forecast is for W winds which is usually best.
Boats should be ready to go by 10:00 am I am thinking we could be downtown by 12:00 and back to Winthrop Harbor sometime around 3:00.
For newbies or others that only ride small lakes....Yes anything can happen but riding Lake Mi is no different than a small lake we are never more than a mile off of the shoreline. There is little to no boat traffic and when there are waves they are predictable. Of course you would never go alone but being in a group is a huge ++++.
For reference a SeaDoo 951 and a Yamaha 1200 use about 10 gals of fuel before filling up @ Belmont Harbor.
It isnt a speed ride my guess is average speed would be around 30. All skis welcome. You dont need a 60+++mph ski to keep up.
Yes the water is cold but the weather will be warm it balances out nicely.

Damn that figures. Me and a friend were planning a Chicago riding trip but it was going to be during my vacation which is 2 weeks later. I might have to ask you a few questions about the area when I know for sure we are going. He's having some "work issues" right now.

I need to check for sure but I think the Mackinaw sailboat race may be starting around the same time. I'll get the facts asap. It may be big hassle with boat traffic, coast guard, police boats.
Anyhow, I'm in.

Not sure how many yet. But there is @ least 2 of us going .
I am going to call down to the Chicago Yacht club this morning to make sure the races dont change things for us. It may only mean parts of Navy Pier would be blocked off. Since we get fuel in Belmont Harbor we should be ok.

I talked to the Harbormaster @ Belmont this morning. The waterways are all open - the racers leave from many different harbors and make their way by Navy Pier. We should have no problems once we are down there.
