From what I have seen the most common GPS's are the Garmin Fortrex 201/101, and the Garmin Etrex. Any of the 3 are realatively inexpensive and work fine if all that you are looking for are speeds and trip distance. Ebay is where I would look.

Yup, the Garmin Forerunner 201 or the Garmin Foretrex 201 are the way to go.

Don't get the 101's as they take batteries. The 201's run a rechargeble Lithium Ion Internal batteries and last 12-14 hours on a full charge.

As the guys said, they are very inexpensive for all the features is offers.

I've seen them as low as 85.00 - 115.00 roughly on ebay.

    * And YES, they are waterproof.

    Here is my Forerunner 201

what is nice also is that you can customize the screens anyway you want. My Forrunner 201 came with software to track speed and distance, as it was tailored for runners, and bikers. Looking at the software, it can be used to track acceleration changes as it gives you a graph of the data. ...the foretrex was made for hikers and hunters.... Both are great.
These models are so compact and even come with a strap extension in case you need to strap it on your bicep, forearm ect.

The extex is the old trusty reliable GPS that has been around for a long time. I would personally use a handlebar mount with it. I've seen them pretty cheap too on ebay
