It's recommended in the manual to use NGK BPR7ES, but most guys here feel the BPR8ES is the better one to use.

Those aren't recommended until the 96 780 engine came out.

I have been using the BPR8ES, but is there any benefit to using the BR8ES in my 96 sl 780?

No, I'm saying you should stay with the correct plugs which are the BPR8ES.
IF you chose or need to use the BR type plug, you would need to go with the BR9ES plug.
