How do you test a fuel guage/sender?

    Hey everyone,

Fuel guage isn't working. How do I test the guage and sender, to figure out which one is the culprit before buying either of the two? I've got the giant shop manual, but couldn't find anything on it. Thanks.

Ahh yes that might help. '94 sl650. Also, I'm not a stranger to checking with a multimeter, was curious on a procedure or what values I should see.

Ok yeah I'll take a look at that. If my ohms change with the float level, I'll go after the guage. Thanks

I believe 33 ohm is full and 240 is empty.

Thanks xlint89, that's the info I was looking for. Strange that nothing of the sort is in the manual, oh well. Tank was sitting at half full, so I topped it off. Meter sat at 241 ohms the whole time, didn't budge. Float sitting on the bottom like an anchor.

I have a spare sl650 sitting here for parts during this project, but I couldn't use the sender from it as it has a guage seperate from the sender. I wonder if that was an update. Well anyways thanks for the info, now I know which way to go.

Hey I'm taking it out on the water tomorrow for some break-in. For the time being, will a '94 sl650 go into limp mode if it thinks the tank is empty? My ski does not have an MFD, so I wouldn't think so. Maybe I can just disconnect the wires if it does give me a problem?

94's didn't have limp mode. Just a warning buzzer for low oil and overheat. I'm using my 94 650 plastic ball float and arm with my MFD.

Both styles will work as the readings are the same. The newer style (without the arm float) doesn't have the guage bouncing all over the place. Man I used to hate that, everytime you'd hit a ripple in the water the fuel guage was flickering. LOL
