tips on adjusting rave valves 96 xp800
I have no idea as to adjusting the rave valves, I understand the principle, but what am I feeling for when I ride it?

i'm not aware of any adjustments that you can do to the RAVE's. there is not much there. all you can really do is clean them and replace the rubber boots and springs that hold them on. the only adjustment that i can think of that you are refering to is the black caps that have the hex head on them. i'm pretty sure that they are supposed to be tight and the springs under the black caps with the red dot's have resistance and not broken.
what adjustments are you refering to? what are you hopeing to accomplish?

The red center in the middle of the cap is adjustable. Clockwise raises the RPM level at which the RAVEs open, counterclockwise lowers it - this is done by the amount of pressure put on the springs.
Does it feel like it lags? If so I'd loosen them just a bit.
For 99% of us, just put them flush with the black portion.

learn something new everyday...didn't know that. mine are flush with the notch thats on the top of the black caps. (stock setting) i assume.
