I don't think so, but if it was left in the the direct sun/heat for a long time....maybe. If it ran fine months ago maybe the octane dropped. LOW OCTANE........ maybe

Did you have any trouble getting it started after it sat for a while ? Perhaps you had to pump the throttle a bunch of times and had excess fuel the cylinders.
Either way if you have "old" gas get it out of there and refuel it.
Earlier this year I had issues with a throttle cable being to tight and had a backfire from the extra fuel. Here in the midwest we store them for 5 months then try and get them started so every once in a while there is a backfire.

If it only backfired once, I wouldn't worry about it. If it continues to do it, I'd look into a little deeper. Do some plug chops and if you can check your pistonwash.
