Exhaust hose disintegration - check yours

I have my exhaust out, modded the waterbox and will be installing thru hull. I pulled the rubber connector off the J pipe (connects to the waterbox) and was really surprised at how it looked. The rubber inside was all bunched up and mushy and the outer 'skin' had separated from the inner skin, and you could feel it when you pinched it. I cut the outer skin and it was totally separated ... the condition of the rubber on the inside, and the fact that the outer layer had separated sure looked like it was a leak waiting to happen ... the whole hose has lost its structural integrity and was very weak and mushy.

I know a few people have had mystery leaks and I thought I would mention this. A small split or tear in this hose would be very hard to see, but would definitely let water in the boat. Maybe I got a defective one, but mine was in bad shape and will be replaced.

If it's the hose I think your talking about, I thought about replacing it with a silicone tubing that could resist higher temps (500F)

    Vern,
I'd check for a minor water blockage going to the exhaust. Something small. Try backflushing. First sign of heat is hose seperation.

    good catch.

Good point Mark, it does look like it got a bit hot. The small holes in the J pipe were clear, but I will backflush just to make sure. Good idea, thanks.
