06 GP1300r Rider Weight limit? (Why)

This is probably a dumb question, but why is there weight limits on skis. I understand the more weight the more unstable and possibility of sinking the ski. If you surpass the weight limit, is there any chance of doing damage to a motor or something due to just being to heavy? Cause i know i have had more than 353lb, which is in the manual, on my ski. Hope i havent caused damage.. Have fun everyone and thanks.
