Went to work today and took home a new friend
There I was working in the shop this afternoon, and as I went to jump on the quad to shuffle a few trailers around the yard, i noticed this dark thing just sitting in the middle of the disgusting shop floor.
A baby Northern Diamondback Terrapin turtle was what it was, all dry and tucked in its shell... wasn't sure if it was dead, so ran it under water to wash the thing off since it was covered in mud, put it in a cardboard box, 5 minutes later it was doing laps in the box and jumping trying to get out.
In 2003 my buddy at work found the same species turtle in the back by the bulkhead, and he took it home (about the same size) and today it's in a 80 gallon tank and is over 6" in diameter and is the most active turtle i've ever seen. Now i'm trying my shot at it haha...
Went to the store, bought some equipment and hoping for the best... I know, I NEED A LIFE hahah
Here's some pics of my little guy (who of course I named Mini Shibby) - I know, pretty Gay huh... also here's a pic of what it will look like once he cleans up and gets older and used to nice clean water rather than the scum he was used to living in by the salty marshlands.

Shibby; I hope you know that terrapins like brackish water. That's why they are found in the Great South Bay flats. Without some salt in the water they can develope skin problems. They are more aquatic than the normal water turtle, and the adults seldom come ashore except to lay eggs. I had one as a kid about 100 years ago. It thrived in an outdoor pen with a big pail sunk in the ground for a pond. They like to eat fish. Be a good Daddy and buy some frozen fish, slice it into small strips and give it to Little Shibby. (defrosted of course). He'll love it.
