When you changed the stator, what did you change the old one with? A used one or brand new one? If brand new, where did you get it? Reason I ask, if you got a new one, it might be from an update kit which will not work with the old CDI. You will also need to get the updated CDI to work with the new stator.

i changed it with a tested used one so the stator is ok but still no spark
i think it sparked once or twice when first tried it but that could be my seeing things

Well there are a few other items that it could be:
    1. Bad CDI
    2. Bad soleniod
    3. Bad coil ignition
    4. Bad battery (requires at least 10.7 volts while cranking to spark) see what kind of reading you get.
    5. Bad spark plug wire connection...cut wires back about 3/8" and reconnect to plugs.
    6. Bad/loose battery wire connections...check especially the negative cable connection to engine...see if corroided.
    7. Can't remember, is there a reset button on the electrical box, if so check to make sure it's pushed in.

It's a start, just go down the list and start checking....

Look in the Tech. section for ways to test some of the items I listed...

I'd start over and test the staor while it's in the engine. Let us know what numbers you get and if it matches the stator test.
I still think it's a better idea to install the entire update kit and make your problem go away. After you make sure the battery is good of course.

hi i now have a faint spark you can hold the plug and get a small belt
could this still be down to the stator or the cdi or will it be the coil as this is the only part i have not changed

So you charged the battery and now have spark?
Install some fresh plugs, put it together and see if it runs.

battery was all ways good and the plugs are new just had a play with all the wires ect but the spark is still not strong you can hold it when sparking but it will not give you a big belt as most would (eg) a big shock more of a tingel
