Grinding, roar in fxho
05 fxho has developed a grinding- roaring noise that has become loud.
Sounds like gearbox???
Quiter out of water-
Increases with rpm
Can hear it best when riding beside ski--
225 hrs-- started 3 hrs ago and has remained about same since.
Cranks- runs fine-- pulls hard runs fast as usual---
Any ideas out there-
Dealer says timing chain and tensioner are problematic at 300 hrs or so-- but this noise sounds more "gear" to me??

there IS a gearbox in the driveline, isn't there? I think the FX uses a gear reducer to get the engine rpms up to 10k. Check behind the engine.

What about the wear ring corroding and rubbing against the impellor?
Like most things though best to sort out prior to running it anymore as you could end up scrapping the ski due to the cost to put things right on these 4 stroke motors. ie it will only get worse and won't fix itself.
The reduction gear is pretty simple on these things, but as they are straight cut does make some noise, even when OK.

i also think pump bearings i have heard failed bearings on a 15f and it was more noticable riding beside it although it got worse as the day progressed
that was due water intrution

200 + hours-- not much setting up time for corrosion to build up on SS impellar parts.
Dealer said he has not seen ANY problems with the reduction drives AT ALL.
He is going to order all bearings for Pump and rebuild it--(warranty I hope)
