Issue while riding this evening - weird noise.

Short summary first, for those that don't know

'01 XLT 1200 - Rebuilt engine, front and rear cylinders stock, center cylinder and piston used but in PRISTINE condition..
    Removed oil injection pump
    110 pilots, 125 mains

Took the ski out Sunday evening, 28:1 oil ratio, ran great, not a prob.
Got about 1/2 tank through it.

Took it out again after work today, No problems all the way down to 1/4 tank..

On the way back, I snapped the throttle shut from about 3/4, and heard an odd sound from the exaust while the engine dropped RPMs.. To the best of my ability, the SOUND reminded me of a fouled plug missing on one cylinder.

IMMEDIATELY shut the engine down (in the middle of a shipping lane) and pulled all 3 plugs. They were wet with oil, but no signs of detonation or any physical problem.
Put the plugs back in, fired it up.. ran fine all the way back to the boat ramp. I *think* I was able to reproduce the sound.. It wasn't as obvious as I had remembered, though.

Again - anyone have some suggestions? Should I worry? Should I check something else?

Thats why i always carry 2 sets of extra plugs with me,especially on a break-in.Could be a fouled plug.Whats the heck is wrong with you man, pulling your plugs out in a shipping lane anyway! I would try new plugs and go ride.Thats the first thing i would do.

I missed that break in ratio ! that is a rich oil mixture I wouldn't sweat it till your running normal mixtures ( spare plugs is a good idea)

OK, I won't worry so much about the noise..

While we're at it, I"m on 1/4 tank...
How would you guys make the transition to 42:1 or even 50:1 in the tank when the carbs havent been fine tuned yet?

I'm scared to death that I'm gonna lean sieze this new engine.

Are you running Yamalube for the break-in? I run Amsoil Interseptor 32:1 and have great luck with it.Keep the fuel up on it,watch the tach, richer is better/safer.Also, never take your plugs out in a shipping lane!

I'm not running Yamalube exactly, I'm doing the Pennzoil equivalent.

When should I start adjusting my carbs off of baseline?

isn't the recommended range for the pv motor 32 to 1? or are you thinking of running less because of synthetic?

I'm not running synthetic, and I don't plan to in the near future.
I just don't remember the ratio off the top of my head...
