Warning to Orlando Jetskiers - 3 dead

    http://www.cnn.com/2007/HEALTH/09/18...kes/index.html

This is really a bad story. 3 young boys are dead from an amoeba that
lives in hot fresh water. All from Orlando, the boys got the amoeba from
wakeboarding and other activities. It goes into your brain and you're
    dead in two weeks.

If you get flu like symptons after riding, head to ER and get some antibiotics.

The same thing happend to 2 young boys here in central Texas. The only way it can enter your body is through your nose from what I have heard. The report here said that of 36 people that have gotten it, all died. VERY SAD

Yeah this is the Nigleria scare that's been going around. It is very rare. @0 something cases in 20+ years. Water temps must be above 80 degrees. The amoeba lives in the mucky soil and only becomes waterborn after being stirred up. It has to be forced up your nose to really make it to the brain where it becomes fatal.

The Orlando cases haven't been directly linked to any particular lake. The latest was supposedly at the Watersport Recreation park off 528, but the water was tested and no Nigleria was found.

The only bonus is that my local lake where I ride has been completely empty. Plenty of parking at the ramp.

Mostly lakes & ponds (or slow moving bodies of FRESH water). The amoeba live in the soil, not the water. When the soil gets disturbed they can be dispersed into the water. The main factor is water temp. It has to be greater than 80 degrees. The younger you are (or immunosuppressed), the greater the risk.

I personally don't give it much thought. If you are worried about it, this would be a good time to hit the waves at the ocean.
