Certainly won't keep much debris out of the impeller, if you run over anything in the water...

Wouldn't you have the same effect by not running a grate at all, or does the grate also have some structural purpose?

This one has a slight scoop at the back edge.I thought I seen somewhere that the R&D Scoop grates help load above the prop too. I'm new to the speed thing,I guess you'd only run it in ideal conditions. The PSI beast has the centers bars cut out of it right now.You wouldn't want to run it in junky water that's for sure.

I ran with no grate for a weekend. My top speed suffered and my holeshot was horrible. Apparently even a stocker somehow directs it into the pump.

I ran one! The good thing is every time you suck up debris ( allot) you can reach right in and clear it

    L.O.L. Notice any speed differance?
Without any thing you don't direct anything in the intake..skip a stone.

Or this my be a grate that had the bars cut out..It's on E-BAY,that's why I ask.

That's a Splash Graphics intake. The open intake is ideal for smooth water and top speed. Obviously not good for keeping debris out or rough water.
