I Believe If You Get Spark As You First Hit The Starter And As You Let Go Of The Button----stator On It's Way Out--
Others Will Chime In With More Help
    Got A Muti-meter? Ever Use 1?
There Is A Coil(stator) Testing Sheet In The Tech Section !!!!!

Johan, WELCOME to the Green Hulk Forums.
Definately charge the battety first and make sure you have at least 10.5 at the battery while cranking.
If you still only get spark when releasing the start button do as everybody else suggested and check that stator.
I'd replace the stator assembly up-date kit as you're going to have to do it anyway (it's just a matter of time).

He's talking about the supply wire to the CDI, it's red and needs to be moved to the orange spade on the terminal box so it doesn't receive a constant 12 volts.
In order for that to be the issue I THINK you wouldn't have any spark at all and the problem would usually occur with a hot engine or control unit. Mainly when the engine runs for awhile and then you try to restart.

It's a cheap and easy fix if it works, certainly worth a try.
