    Welding a crank

What parts are welded when you weld the crank? What does this accomplish?

The pins get welded to the web/counterweights.

It makes a stronger crank that's impossible to get "out of phase"

Problem with it? When it goes, it GOES and takes basically the whole engine with it. Catastrophic failure.

Just a FYI...any crank, welded or not will trash a case, if the piston pin bearings fail, which is the most common failure. Second most common is rod bearing failure.

Welding prevnts out of phase...but I've been told if you know what you are doing the crank will never twist, without welding it either. I have a Rotax Racing lightened 800 crank in my VE920...not welded...and revs instantaneous.
