    2008 PWCs Some Strange Specs

In the October issue of Watercraft World I found some intertering and also some vague statements. Honda-artical states Honda's new Aquatrax F-15's new 1470cc motor (four cylinder) puts out 200 brake horse power. Interesting statement because brake horsepower is figured with no accesories on the motor. When engine is fitted with all components it will be less than 200 horsepower. Big disapointment--but clever advertising.
Yamaha-largest cc motor ever installed by a manufactor in a PWC. Shaved 50 plus pounds off the hull weight due to new hull composites. However, according to the Watercraft world test "the FX SHO reached 65 mph." I can only guess what the horsepower mignt be due to the fact Yamaha wont say. Why is this a big secret?? Is the horsepower in the low 200 range? Must be with the lighter weight and big motor and only 65 mph. Sea-Doo--artical states "Sea-Doo is enticing you with a color version of the removeable Garmin GPS in the GTX Limited. Instead of this--why not have made the 255 hp motor an option. Come on Sea-Doo--get your head out. Looking forward to all these boats showing up on the lake. Let the fun begin.

So Yamaha won't say how much HP that big engine has?

There are no accessories on a pwc engine... so honda isn't trying to be "clever". All pwc are regulated to 65mph by the manufacturers so no matter how much hp they have they're not going to be faster than that when stock, give or take a few mph.

boostin - if your statement that all manufacturers are limited to 65 mph then how do you explain your 68 mph on your stock ski? I think the United States Coast Guard limit is 70, but that's just something I read someone posting on here somewhere.

Regardless, in Japan the horsepower limit on cars is or was 276 - so it's no wonder how they all come in at that limit. It's just a play as to the RPM level that reading is taken. And then with a few changes and you've got a ton of horsepower out of a Skyline...hmm

Any manufacturer that has numbers better than the other manufacturers will advertise those as their strong point. That would be foolish not to. Biggest engine = Yamaha. Most horsepower = Seadoo. What else is there besides speed? Well if that's limited then there's not a lot of exclusivity in that if everyone could get that mark but not go over.

Think Yamaha is just trying to avoid the whole HP pissing match that's going on.

This is very intersting. The GTXL spec's say 215 hp, but I found this pic on their site:

... which clearly has a 255 stickere on the side. Looks like an info slipup on SD's part. It'll probably come in '09.

I remember when the RXP came out, they said it would do 65....That was with 2 people, 90% fuel, and a bunch of stuff in storage.....but when you empty it, go 1/4 tank, and one person, close to 70....While others achieve their speed with already light load and fuel....

When ski's are "gentleman's agreement" for top end, its all on how they measure it...Its all a number's game...

On the official Seadoo website right now for the GTX Limited under Gallery photos it shows more than one pic with the 255 sticker on it. It is $300 more than the RXT-X so it would make sense that it would have the 255 engine. If not, I still don't know why you'd pay more for something that has 40 horsepower less when you can get the accessories for cheaper like the GPS and add the soft seat, etc.
