It receives a pulse from the engine and opens the passage for fuel to pass between the pump and carbs.
These units were problematic and by-passed in later years. Once removed, you should make sure the fuel valve is closed during non use as a way to avoid a possible hydro-lock situation.

Just remove the auto cock. No need for it if you use the fuel shut off valve.

Yes, upgrade it to a triple outlet. It can be had for around $35. Try John Zigler or Watcon.com.

if you do it correctly, you will use ALL outlets. ( one inlet, one out to ea. carb, pulse line, ect).

sorry, it does not come with any specific instructions, but the conversion is really pretty straight forward.

i am pretty sure all has it posted here in the tech section, with pics, ect.

I just installed a Mikuni triple out on my 750 and it was pretty straight forward. The housing has arrows indicating flow directions. The fitting in the center of the pump is for the pulse line running from the crank case and the rest are ID'd one in and three out. I used some 1/4 metal dowels that you can get from the auto parts store to plug the lines that used to transfer to the next carb. I dont see why you couldn't use 1/4 bolts or all thread to serve the same purpose. If you haven't already, be sure to replace the pulse line with high quality re-inforced fuel line and keep it as short as possible (~10 inches or so) On my 750, the new pump bolted back up to the same bracket as the original.
