What kind of helmet?
The Abbott thing has me freaked out, so I decide to buy a helmet. It's hard to order one over the internet without trying it on first, so I'd like to buy one local. Only problem is that the local sports stores only have helmets for kayaking, snowboarding, etc. Some of them look like the Goth (Gath?) helmets that have been recommended on the forum.
Any reason why a snowboard/snowskiing/kayaking helmet wouldn't work? The one's I've seen look pretty cool and are under $100.

Thanks BD - but nobody carries Gath locally and I'd like to try one on.
Edit - just noticed that the Gath's are kayaking helmets, so the ones at the local sports stores ought to work. Going to try some on this week.

I went with a full coverage Shoei motorcycle helmet with a face shield - if I wear the helmet I will always also wear a neck brace
my motocross helmet and goggles are on the shelf beside my R&D grates - I was too worried about the front edges of the helmet getting caught on the water resulting in a neck injury
I also replaced my rear intake grate bolts with the next size larger (everyone needs to do that)

if you are looking are different helmet options I think one of the areas to check closely is how well they will protect your ears
some of these helmets will have opening s at the ears so you can hear better - I don't think for our application that is a good thing

i am waiting on one of these for me
last week end i had a very big fright and a freind ended up in hospital, both our ski's were damamged quite badly as a result of a small mistake that ended up being very costly and could have ended in tragedy.
I dont think i will ride without one again.
the reason i got the one shown is because it has no visor so it wont try to rip my head off should i could off and it has good ear coverage too. it also has sun shaded lens so i wont have to worry about being blinded by the sun and it covers my jaw reasonably well. the liner can also be removed from it so i can be dried out.
if it does not work well for me i will get an MX style one.

Please make sure you wear a neckbrace.. else a head injury will be the least of your problems.
