    impeller removal

    Hey guys,

Sorry about being a stranger, I've been hittin the books pretty hard lately! I am ready to take the impeller off my slx and see what kind of mess is in there. I did the stub shaft in the vice test, and the impeller didnt spin, so its definately the bearings that are gone. If i hold the housing I can rotate it around the stub shaft about 1/4 turn left and right, so its pretty jammed up.

Is impeller removal difficult? I will also need to borrow a removal tool, if anybody has one, that would be excellent. From what I have been reading, this chronic pump problem just doesnt have many variables associated with it. either:

    a) alignment is off (but the splines are in good shape) which leads me to believe that:
    b) the driveshaft has too much runout (very probable since I doubt its been checked, and people have been slamming new bearings on again and again to see the same thing happen lol)
    c) The stub shaft is also bent, I might replace it regardless, I hear they aren't too expensive.

other than this, I can predict that the bearings where installed incorrectly. Is bearing installation hard? what equipment will I need in order to do the job.

I just want to get all my ducks in a line so that when I do borrow the impeller remover, I can return it in a decent amount of time.

    Thanks all

You can buy a removal/installation tool for around $20 off ebay. I believe there's the instructions on how to remove and replace pump bearings in the tech section. Listed under propulsion or drive line.

Sea-smith; I recently bought an impeller removal tool from smokycat4 on eBay for $21 including shipping.

You can borrow it for the cost of round trip postage (Toronto-Ottawa-Toronto), if you like. It is still new, in the package. Weighs about 160 grams, and is maybe 2 inches long.

Given the fairly low cost of these things, you might want to have your own, just in case you need to get into that stator of yours again some day for whatever reason.

Let me know if you want to use mine.

what do you guys think of this one? It would be used on a 96 sl900 and a 99 slx.
