    Uh-oh! Bad Starter?

I always start my ski before leaving the driveway and glad I did!

I hit the start button, it turned over for a second then stopped. I kept hitting the start button and only heard the relay click in the electrical box. My battery was fully charged but I swapped it out with another charged one with the same results.

In the past I've had occasions when this would happen but only on the first attempt and then it would be okay. This time, no joy.

I removed a spark plug and was able to easily push a piston down, and I gently hit the starter with a hammer, but no change. I also wiggled the wire where it's bolted to the starter.

    Bad starter?

Actually, sounds like the battery crapped out on you. But since you did the swap, maybe it is the starter, or a solenoid.

Nope, i used to topped off batteries that are new or very new. The nut on the starter was hot so juice is getting there. I'm trying to pull the starter but Polaris didn't think easy access was that important....I need three hands and only one hand will fit!

Check the ground cable to the engine/engine bed plate.
    Check the lanyard/stop switch.

The cable from the battery to the engine is secure. The stop switch seems ok. It should crank anyhow without the key. Just get the relay clicking and the volts drop to 7.5 in a second or so.

Any ideas how to get the top bolt off the starter? The exhaust is in the way just enough to make it hard to get the socket on straight enough to torque it. I've got a spare starter.

OK, I got both bolts off the starter.....now how do I slide it out? It's in there tight!

That top bolt was a beotch. I had to use a 1/4" stubby and barely had the strength to get enough torque on it.

That's what I use 1/4 drive stuff. The rubber seals going into the cases are probably pretty dry and the hold up at this point. Try to wiggle and twist??
I'm sure nobody has to tell you to test the starter while off the engine to verify it's bad and your spare is good.
