    97 spx

    hi all
my first post on this site
I'm hoping someone can help me out (judging by the posts im sure you all can). I just got 97 spx w/110 hp. Apparently it has sat for several yrs(without being winterized)The only good thing, it was stored indoors.
I did read a post about someone having the same type of situation.I followed reco's fogging, turning shaft by hand more oil (did this for 4 days) ect..... I tried connecting the batt, put the plugs in, and the machine will not turn.Checked battery, boosted but still wont crank. Pulled the plugs out and it cranks/turns no problem. Any suggestions?

    Welcome!

Are you getting the double beep when you install the lanyard?

If yes, then get two alligator clips (jumper wires), and a volt meter. Install the clips on the meter leads, then connect one to the starter hot terminal on the starter (under the carbs, you'll have to slide the red rubber cap back), and the other to battery ground. Install the lanyard, push the start button, and if you are getting 10+ volts to the starter, go to step 2.
If below 10 volts, let us know and we'll type other diagnostics.

    2. Move the ground lead wire from the battery to a good ground on the engine, preferrably on the eye tab the negative battery cable where it bolts to the engine. Scrape it with a screwdriver to get clean metal. Now try to start it again. If the voltage is below what you previously measured then the battery ground wire is bad. If the voltage is the same, the starter is bad.

Let us know what you find...

Thanx's for the response and suggestions
    I am getting the beeps
Starter voltage and negative lead were both at 4 volts.
Does this mean I need a new starter?
Where do I go from here?
BTW, thought I'd mention I'm in Toronto Canada (cold winter already)

Ok, it's either your starter solenoid or bad battery.

Easiest first- put your meter leads on either side of the battery. Try to start it and see if the voltage drops below 10 volts. If so, it has bad cells in it and is opening under load. Just get a new battery. If you are using the original several year old battery...this is probably it.

If not, let me know and I'll fill you in on checking the solenoid.

PS- It's warmer in the south!

Just wanted to say thanks. As suggested purchased a battery, she works.
Thank you very much for help.
Just one other Q, Other than winterizing this machine, is there anything I should do keeping in mind this thing sat for a few years.

Ok the basics of old Doos, clean a rebuild the carbs, the fuel selector valve and replace the fuel lines(and fuel filters too) use 1/4" automotive fuel line it takes a little less than 20' of it and a couple dozen hose clamps. Next clean and rebuild the RAVE valves. Check down the RAVE openings for crud or corrosion. Since it sat for years I'd buy a new head gasket and pull the head to check for corrosion in the cylinders and on the pistons and to see if there are other problems.
