Is it possible to convert a 1300PV to NonPV?

Is it a simple swap of cylinder/piston assemblies to convert from PV to non-PV motor. I realize the PV motor would have to be removed. Is the CPU timing curve different? Can I still use the staggered compression head from the '03-04 motor?

I would think you could do this swap (I haven't done this swap, but the cylinders are physically the same dimensions)

no idea on the timing curves - I wouldn't worry about it, if they made a change it was small

yes you can use the 03 head

I would suggest you also replace the 1st section of the exhaust pipe - Yamaha made some changes to it to improve the HP curve below 6,000 rpm

Im running 05 cylinders in the 1200r.also removed the pv motor and cable.
    im using a
    3 degree key
    155,155,150 on stock milled head.
    14/20 prop
    jims plate
    1200grate

the fastest it ran yet was 73.5 @ 7320rpms
jim was there to verify how short it got to that speed.
as soon as i get the reeds in a 14/22 will go nicely with it.

my point is that yes it is possible to go to non-pv. im doing it with carbs. and like philip_gpr said i am using the 1st exhaust section off the 05 also.

Thanks guys, I'm figuring the torque curve won't be as pronounced in the midrange with a non-pv vs. pv motor. I'm tired of cleaning the damn things, they get deposits so quickly, and the PV motor has to strain to actuate the movement.

    Philip:

Does the primary section of the exhuast from a non-pv benefit a pv motor?

Guys the non pv water box is also different in that it has more back pressure and I think it makes a bigger difference than the exhaust pipe.

This needs to be tested, the top end speed guys need to try a non pv water box to see if you gain more peak rpms

Damn thats a lot of trouble just to not have to clean the power valves sometimes. I run amsoil and my valves were just black but didn't have anything on them when i took apart my motor.

    Robert:
That seems to be the most cost effective solution. A while back I read a thread regarding 2 stroke injection oil and one forum member mentioned that after a prolonged time he could still see the original cross hatch marks on the inside cylinder walls; this from using Yamalube 2W. The area Yamarep also mentioned that the oil was of good quality, and using Yama Ring Free (2 stroke Techron), the sludge could be avoided. I tried the Ring Free; still plenty deposits.
Looks like I need to clean them out completely and start using something within the Klotz line (as per Carl @ IR).
