Rectifier failure and melted lwiring harness

I was out on the ski yesterday (2004 GP1300r) and the rectifier fried itself causing the eng to stop and a small fire with the wiring harness.

    Are rectifier failures common?

Also has any one got an old wiring harness off a 1300 that I could either buy or better still a damaged one so the back part can be cut and I can then splice it into mine.

The wiring harness is over $500 new so Iím looking for a cheaper way out of this.

Alternatively anyone know where you can get the Yamaha type plug connectors?

    Cheers

    Kev

    Kev,
it's not a common fault that's for sure!
N&C jetski in the wirral do Yamaha conectors-loads of different types.
Rius racing also have loads of second hand stuff for the 1300's ( They convert to carbs etc for racing), so he could probably help you with a harness.

Actually believe it or not this happened on my 06! Your the only other time ive heard of this happening At that time it had 60 hours or so. Kevski, do you ride in salt water? Mine caught on fire in the water, ski running. Engine light started flashing since the engine was breathing burning plastic. Mine burned in the same spot and the actual silicone burned a nickel size circle in the rectifier. When I looked at the clip it had melted internally.... That little plastic clip is a honda part... Yamaha doesn't want to tell you but its 8 bux as opposed 500 for the harness. Part# 21200017 (Honda wiring Connector) I have the box in my hand. Its a do it yourself plug with terminals and its rite for the rectifier. Ill post pics..

    Cheers Ink,

Yes I do ride in salt water with 140 hours on the ski.

Yes there were a few flames round the wiring.

I'll get a new rectifier on order and see if I can track that Honda part no. down in the UK.

When I took mine apart it appeared that the salt corroded the terminals causing them to arc. There was definately alot of build up on the plug terminals that didnt burn. All other electrical components read within spec. Check your fuses too. The yellow one should be blown.

yep yellow fuse has blown, also looks like the terminals have suffered from the salt and gone a bit green.

Just hope that it hasn't blown anything else.

It probably didnt... The fuse blew on mine and that was all... New rectifier was 170 or so and the clip was 8 bux... Not sure how that translates to UK money...
