    need opinions on a '97 gp1200

Well i've been just looking around for something a little bit bigger and faster, and seen a couple of '97 gp1200's around my area.

first, are they reliable machines? what kind of speeds does it reach? and any other comments about the 1200's would be great!

Group K website has a lot of good info at there website
Stock 97 was 57mph or so.
I have been playing around with the GP for a few years and love them I am looking at a GPR next but will hang on to a GP as well.
The 99 was a little faster but the 97 can be set up like a 99 with some changes.
Lots of things you can do to the GP to go faster as well.

great holeshot, YAMAHA reliability fun as hell awesome jumper thirsty lots of storage for its size. Buy mine 3g's, fresh motor and it's a 99 that has seen 65mph.

Comparable to a 125cc dirt bike. Light and lots of throttle response. Hell of a jumper. Performance parts are cheap and easy to find, right here on the forum.

    GP's are bullet proof

I got a 97 GP1200 with 340hrs on it. It has only had a few problems one for sure mod needed is a primer. And the speedo runs real slow, I'll be going like 30-50ish it will read 5mph. It has an excellent holeshot and a decent top-end. If your going to keep your ski bone stock I'd look at the GP800, it is a little slower top end than the 1200, but not much. The GP 800 get's twice the gas milage of the 1200. My friend has a GP 800. The ski is bullet proof with a few mods like waveater clips and going premix. If you are going to mod your ski definitely go with the 1200. I love my 1200, but it's a gas hog.

I love GP1200's. I am not ever going to get rid of mine. The first thing that needs to be done is get rid of the plastic trim tabs, (if they have not already broke off), and get some billet tabs from Riva or Protec if they still make them. If not, you should be able to get some made.

When my stock ones broke off back in 1997, I rode without tabs for a long time. Riva was not finished with production of the billet tabs yet. I was a little faster but it did not hook up good and would get airborne too easy. I mastered the technique in smooth water though.
