How many of you work on the road, or away from home the majority of the time?

it is getting hard and wearing on everything being away from home and in hotels 3-4 days every single week......how do you guys deal with it? ......what is the "secret?"

Spent 7 years on the road working average of 3 weeks a month not home. Finally got tired of it and looked for a job that had a lot less travel requirements.

It has been 7 years now that I have left the other company, no regrets at all. It has been nice to see my kids graduate from high school and other things. I dont miss flying or hotels at all.

When are you going to swing by Morgan Hill and say hi? When you are single it is a different story. Or if your woman works as much as you. I use to be out of the house at 5:30 AM and not get home till 10-11:30 5 days a week. Granted I was able to come home almost every night. It sure does take a lot out of you. I just use to look at the big goal I was working for and that was a big help, since I knew I was not going to be doing it for the rest of my life. You need to take some vacation time also to help out.

can I ask what type of work you do? How did you survive 7 yeas?

I'm a field service guy who fixes x-ray machines, but I'm pretty specialized with experience in semi and pharma fields only.

I am just a student and I don't see my future career as a Lawyer requiring me to travel as much but my parents both work for the government. My father just recently retired but he only traveled once every two months. My mother on the other hand wears a bigger wig than my dad did within the FAA. She travels to Washington D.C. about twice a month. In fact she is there right now. There have been times where she has been gone for 2 or 3 weeks on end for federal executive training and she hates that. Seems like the longer she is gone the more times in a day she will call me. She is in her late 40's.... even though she will tell you she is no older than 29 all day long. I'm not sure how she deals with it other than she loves her job. I am talking LOVES her job.

I have thought about this when it comes to my self. Because of courses I have taken in college I find being in the clandestine service at the CIA very appeling. Sounds like a fun job I would love, but certain things turn me away from it, being away from family, friends, and the money. Same thing with being a pilot.

The best advice I can give you from what I have experience from the other side, the family side, is if you love your job keep it. If you don't, find a new one. It is not worth being away from your family and other things for a job you do not love.

Good luck buddy! Look at it this way, if you stay on the road we will keep you company.

I was doing technical training for Novell, Microsoft, HP, Compaq and Nortel. Fly in on Sunday, setup the class, teach all week, packup, fly home to do it all over the next week.

How did I do it, well I thought I was being a good family provider, the company was giving me good raises and incentives to keep up the work. But I was loosing out on time with the wife and kids. So when I asked to reduce the travel they said no, so I looked for a new job and left them.

Would I do it again, no way, time at home is too valuble, money is not everything.

When I was younger and coming out of college, I hooked up with a Japanese Trading Company and was traveling within a week of starting there...I flew around the country, and sometimes internationally...

For myself, being young and not strapped down other than a girlfriend, it was FUN...I got to see things on the company dime, yet after awhile it did get repetitious...
