What rideplate finish is best for speed?

Since I am now commited to refinishing my rideplate after installing skegs(I am somewhat OCD and halfsanded isn't going to cut it for me even if I can't see it) So I am polling you guys to see what is best.

If you vote other please elaborate

powdercoating is a good trick too. Its super smooth then. I know some ppl who have seen gains with powder coated grate and plates.

I have tested a lot of finishes on my race boats and the best has always ben 220 on a DA.

Let's not forget, the ride plate is also the radiator and we still need to retain good heat transfer characteristics. More speed is not the only consideration.

No one has seen gains from going to a finer sand. like a 600 or 1000 grit.

+1 me and the da are on very friendly terms

Consider this.... Have you ever noticed that on a painted , and smooth sanded 1000 grit lower unit ( on say 100+mph boat) that you have trouble keeping paint on it? but if you rough the paint a bit it lasts 20x longer?
This is due to surface tension literally pulling off the paint. If you break that tension with 400 or 220, the paint isnt ripped from surface. This is also I think why mercury just leaves satin finish on their racing lowers now as opposed to years past having them painted.

So it's not worth sanding the rideplate past 220 grit?

nope, the way it is new is the best finish that you can get for reducing drag.
