Has anyone tried spacing the stock reeds on the 1300?

I'm not ready to buy the vf3s yet, so I'd like to try using a 3/8" spacer on the stock reeds. Can anyone give me some feedback??
    Thanks,

    jp

I used that set up on a 1390 with modified oem carbs = 82.5.Most tuners would agree there's a twofold gain.It allows the boost port to do a better job of cooling, and free's up a few rpm's.

For the ammount of effort required and the costs of the spacer plate.

Wouldnt one be better off just saving and doing the vf3's ?

Cost is not comparable. I sold the spacer for about $50 if I remember right VF-III reeds are a whole hell of a lot more than that. A couple hours time is not a bad investment for a few rpm.

Oh, i thought the plate was us$150 and its us$500 for the complete vf3 kit.

I assume one needs an efi to run the space with oem reeds ?

This spacer is not the same one that is on the VF-III kits. There were a few different companies made them and I believe you could get 6mm and 8mm thick spacers.

I never had VF-II reeds so I can't answer that, maybe someone who has run them will chime in.

The original 2000 GP1200r reeds used reed stops that did not have any openings in them. Not sure what year, ( as Mark suggested below maybe 2002) Yamaha revised the reed stop design and added some openings.

With the revised reed stops, the OEM reeds work better than the original GP1200R design. The new design is faster than the 1200.

Now if you use the spacer plate as shown above, with the improved designed OEM reeds, there is a 2nd improvement to be had due to fact the reeds do not block the boost port as much with the specer installed.

While I haven't tested the improved design OEM reeds with the spacer plate I have spoken to others that have. The revised OEM reeds with spacer plate work really well. They are only .5 to .7 mph slower than a set of $500+ VFIIIs.

On my ski I am using VFIIs and the spacer plate pictured above.
