Muddy had an issue with his 07 that kept popping off, turned out it was a loose bracket....BUT every time we reinstalled it we simply removed the hinge from the hull, lifted, snapped it on, then let the weight of the hood compress it so we can put the bolts back in....Finally tightened the bracket and it never popped again...

But I am sure there is a better way...

Maybe... but you just described the only way I've ever been able to do it!

This is the way it is described on the Workshop manuel... be carfull and watch the tip or point of the lid when doing this, put a cloth in the grooved spot of the hull and where the tip meets! You can crack the fiberglass! The shock is very hard to compress by hand..take a piece of wood and have someone help you out if you don't want to disessemble the bracket the hood holds onto!

    Here is an easy way!

get a very large hose/worm type clamp, may even require 2 put together.
simply put clamps around the ends of the shock in a way that the screw part is in the center of the shock and start to close in the shock, help it a little by compressing. Once you get the right length to install, pop it on and remove the clamps...
