    GTX SC Oil Leak

On my last ride of the season I noticed that my GTX SC lost some oil... upon inspection, I found that the O-ring on the cap of the oil filter housing was bulging from the housing. I had gone on at least 5 rides with no observed oil loss up to that point. I started my ride in the driveway and watched a stream of oil spraying from the housing where the O-ring was bulging... so I just loosened the bolt, pushed the O-ring back in place and re-tightened it.

The "lid" had last been put on by a dealership so I don't know if it was overtightened or not - but it appeared to be.

    Anyone else have this happen?

I don't expect any more trouble since I pushed it back in and tightened it to spec... but just checking - is this a sign of trouble or just an overzealous tightening?

Do you have the plastic cap or the metal one? The plastic caps were replaced in 2004 IIRC. There are small o-rings under the bolt and a larger one on the perimeter of the cap. It's kind of hard to see when it's tightened, but as you found out, it will leak if not installed correctly.... Ron

I think it is plastic -- an '03 GTX SC -- if it is, I'll buy a metal cap to replace it.

    Thanks!

No, it won't be a problem as long as the plastic cap is not deformed or cracked and the o-ring is not mangled or cut. Either way, to go to a metal cap and replaced o-ring won't set you back that much.

Do you know if the existing bolt will work with the metal cap?

The bolt is $27 and the dealer could not tell me for sure that it would work. I have to order the cap so I would not be able to tell until I got it home... not like I couldn't wait, but thought I would ask to save some time.

I replaced the plastic cap with the metal one and used the same bolt. Wow, $27 for that bolt?... Ron
